Monte Fenix Institute for Research on Addictions

Bringing together the fields of psychology and addiction treatment, the Monte Fenix Institute sponsors applied clinical research into the causes and treatment of all forms of addictive behavior. It provides opportunities for Alliant faculty and students to interact with researchers and practitioners from the Monte Fenix Clinic in Mexico City, providing special opportunities for cross-cultural studies in addictions treatment.

The Monte Fenix Institute was founded in 2007 through a partnership with the Monte Fenix Foundation in Mexico City, whose Chairman, Jorge Larrea Espinosa, is an alumnus of Alliant’s Mexico City Campus and a former Trustee of the Alliant International University. The Monte Fenix Foundation, established in 1980, is one of the world’s leading centers of treatment, research and training in the field of addictions, having helped over 4,000 individuals and 12,000 family members. It offers detoxification and rehabilitation services and facilities as well as a training institute for treating addictions.

The Institute’s goal to provide research, training and educational opportunities to doctoral students at the California School of Professional Psychology, fueling the necessary study of one of the most common, but least understood, problems psychologists encounter: addiction. The research and training at the Institute translate into an improved understanding of individuals, families, and communities affected by addiction, ultimately providing new and helpful insights into individual, group, family and community treatment.

The Institute provides opportunities for Alliant faculty and students to interact with researchers and practitioners from the Monte Fenix Clinic, as well as internship and field study opportunities in Mexico. With participants from the US and Mexico, the Institute provides special opportunities for cross-cultural studies in addictions treatment. The Addictions Institute is a "virtual" institute, open to participation by faculty and students from all campuses and programs at Alliant. An Advisory Board oversees Institute projects.
